Saint Anna
Saint Anna was the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos; therefore, she was the Grandmother of Christ. She was elderly and childless. She and her husband Joachim prayed fervently for a child, who was born miraculously in their old age. They dedicated their daughter, Mary, to God, to live in the Holy Temple, much like St. Anna’s namesake, Hannah, the mother of the Prophet Samuel. This icon is based on a miraculous icon of St. Anna at St. Tikhon’s Monastery, Pennsylvania.
